Born in 1985 in Manila, Al grew up during a pivotal era in Philippine history. His parents, both from working class background, toiled to provide for their family amidst the tumultuous backdrop of Martial Law. This period, marked by widespread civil unrest and political repression under Ferdinand Marcos, deeply influenced Al’s early years.
In 1986, when Al was just a year old, the People Power Revolution erupted. This peaceful uprising saw millions of Filipinos, including many from the proletariat like Al's parents, take to the streets to demand the end of Marcos' dictatorship. The revolution culminated in the restoration of democracy and the overthrow of the Marcos regime.
Growing up in the post-revolution Philippines, Al witnessed the country's efforts to rebuild and recover from years of authoritarian rule. These experiences instilled in Al a profound understanding of the value of freedom and the power of collective action, shaping their perspective on social justice and civic responsibility.
In 2015, searching for better opportunities, Al moved to London. There, he studied printmaking and painting, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene of the city. The artist now holds a studio in South Kensington, where he has established a successful career as a painter and printmaker. London's rich cultural landscape provided Al with exposure to diverse artistic influences, allowing him to blend his cultural heritage with new techniques and perspectives. Al explores themes of identity, resilience, and social equality, celebrating his roots while engaging with the broader human experience.
